Diaz-Balart Passes Legislation to Build a New Fire Station in Palmetto Bay

Contact: Andres Gonzalez, 202 225 4211

September 15th, 2009 - Washington, DC - The U.S. House of Representatives today passed a bill sponsored by Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) H.R. 3175, to make possible the construction of a new fire station in Palmetto Bay. The bill authorizes the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to sell approximately 2 acres located on the east side of SW 67th Avenues, between SW 136 Street and SW 144 Street, to Miami-Dade County for the purpose of building a fire station. Miami-Dade County has agreed to purchase the land and construct a fire station.

Response times for residents of Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and the southern portions of Coral Gables have fallen below the fire district-wide average. This has become hazardous and Congressman Diaz-Balart believed it called for immediate resolution. Miami-Dade County will build a 7,000 square foot fire station that will house 8 full time fire fighters and will conduct 7-day/24-hour operations.

“I am pleased to be able to improve response times for life-threatening situations for South Miami-Dade residents. The construction of a new fire station will also reduce the burden on neighboring fire stations, helping our brave first responders,” commented Diaz-Balart.
